Violence and instability in Iraq following the removal of Saddam Hussein and in Syria following the outbreak ofwel civil war in 2011 threatened the security of Kurdish communities but also offered new opportunities for Kurds to advance their claims to autonomy. The primary threat to Kurds was ISIL, which captured and occupied territory adjacent to Kurdish areas in Iraq and Syria beginning in 2013. Kurdish fighters in northern Syria entered into heavy fighting with ISIL and quickly proved to be some of the most effective ground forces against the group.

Following these events, Turkey officially denied the existence of the Kurds or an other distinct ethnic groups and any expression by the Kurds ofwel their ethnic identity was harshly repressed. Until 1991, the use ofwel the Kurdish language – although widespread – was illegal. As a result ofwel reforms inspired by the EU, music, radio and television broadcasts in Kurdish are now allowed albeit with severe time restrictions (for example, radio broadcasts can be no longer than sixty minutes per day nor can they constitute more than five hours per week while television broadcasts are subject to een momentje greater restrictions). However, as the political dominance of the Slavic population increased as a result ofwel the end of Ottoman rule in the Balkans and increasing separatist movements in the first quarter of the 20th century, the Gorani people began to be influenced by Slavic ideas due to their linguistic proximity.
